Having recently left his 7 year career and position as Principal Trombone of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), Marques Young or now known as Q Sound has stepped out with his own efforts for an upcoming visual EP; ´Duel Citizenship’. Set to be available globally in early 2016, the music video for the title track has just been released as the first instalment of an unconventional jazz short film. His return to jazz is unsurprising since having shared the stage with notable jazz artists from the likes of Benny Golson, Paquinto D’Rivera, and Wynton Marsalis. Q Sound is also backed by an impressive list of past performances, namely for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as opening for Jose James, BabyFace and recently Hiatus Kayote with the band Basement Syndicate. This Juilliard School graduate whom blossomed under the tutelage of living legends such as Joseph Alessi, Wycliffe Gordon and Steve Turre is already geared to turn heads.
Inspired by personal experience, the ‘Duel Citizenship’ music video directed by emerging filmmaker Al Ibrahim speaks of intertwined conflicts narrated by Q Sound‘s music. Caught between two worlds for much of the past decade, Q Sound unravels the pains of an Asian-based American jazz and classical musician living a secret life of a lover and performer at a crossroads. “It´s not so much about defining yourself,” said Young “but about exploring what you can do by continuously evolving. I went through confusing stages in both my music and personal life, so
the evolution process itself was liberating.” Known publicly to have immersed himself in multiple genres not only as a skilled trombonist but also as a composer, songwriter, arranger and conductor, he’s one to embrace change quickly.
‘Duel Citizenship’ is a result of musical experiments, that will bring fans through a myriad of conflicting emotions surrounding love and loss from Q Sound‘s dark past whilst answering the question `Who is Q Sound?´. Fans can now pre-order Q Sound’s debut EP and expect notable appearances from Asian artists Najwa Mahiaddin, John Thomas, Rie Tsuji and American musicians Patrick Terbrack, Marion Felder and more.
