Watched THE CHANGE-UP premiere screening one rainy evening (September 26) at Greenbelt 3, Ayala Malls, Makati City courtesy of Solar Entertainment Corporation.
I am a sucker for adult comedy films and when I saw the trailer for The Change-Up, it gives me the impression that I will enjoy watching this movie. Also, I’ve been enjoying a lot of comedy films done by its main cast Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal) and Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and thought it’s interesting to see them switch characters for this film.
Here’s a synopsis of the movie:
Growing up together, Mitch Planko (Ryan Reynolds) and Dave Lockwood (Jason Bateman) were two inseparable best friends, but as the years have passed, they have slowly drifted apart. Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three children and Mitch is a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked. To Mitch, Dave has it all: his beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), three children who adore him and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. To Dave, living Mitch’s stress-free life without obligation or consequence would be a dream come true.
Following a drunken night out together, Mitch and Dave’s worlds are turned upside down when they wake up in each other’s bodies and proceed to freak out. Despite the freedom from their normal routines and habits, the guys soon discover that each other’s lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once seemed. Further complicating matters are Dave’s sexy legal associate, Sabrina McArdle (Olivia Wilde) and Mitch’s estranged father, Mitch, Sr. (Alan Arkin). With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave struggle to avoid completely destroying each other’s lives before they can find a way to get their old ones back.
The last time I enjoyed a movie with a swapping theme of character is the John Travalota-Nicolas Cage action movie “Face Off” (although that one literally swapped because of surgery). The Change-Up is more of a fantasy film because they accidentally exchanged bodies for wishing in a well while peeing. Although the movie is good, it fails to explain or broaden what’s so magical with the well. I don’t think it’s even considered a wishing well. You will not expect any fairies or witches or potions to magically turned them back to their old selves. All they need is to find the well that was relocated elsewhere and wish again.
But since this is a comedy film, all you have to focus with is how Mitch and Dave struggles living each other’s lives. I admire both actors because they played the character well and showed each other’s personality and acted out their opposite characters.
And there are some scenes that will make you laugh out loud, not to mention the usual gay-jokes you see from other previous adult comedy films (American Pie, Hang Over, Hall Pass, etc.). And may I add that Olivia Wilde sizzles in this movie? Too bad, the movie has cuts although you may still see the occasional bouncing boobs in some parts of the film. And don’t miss out TATIANA scene. That one is hilarious!
If you want a fun movie with moral lessons (and may I add, some family values), then The Change-Up is worth your money. You will love Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds more when they changed characters. And you will learn that in life, one must know what matters most and what makes you truly happy.
