Movie Review: Ghost Rider Spirit Of Vengeance

Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider™ Spirit of Vengeance. In this gritty new vision for the character, directed by Neveldine/Taylor (Crank), Johnny is still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter – but he may risk everything as he teams up with the leader of a group of rebel monks (Idris Elba) to save a young boy from the devil… and possibly rid himself of his curse forever.

I remember watching Ghost Rider movie in 2007 and all I can remember from it is it stars Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes. This year, a sequel is made and the lovely Eva Mendes is no longer part of it.

But since it is shown in 3D, I gave it a try and watched its Philippine Press Screening courtesy of Warner Bros. Philippines (Thank you sir Jay Gonzales for the passes).

In the movie, Johnny Blaze is still coping with his curse as the devil’s hunter. He wanted to get rid of the curse whatever it may take. In this case, he agreed to protect Satan’s human son, Danny (Fergus Riordan), from the devil, Roarke (Ciaran Hinds). But the question is, what will happen if he succeeded that mission?

That’s where all the action take place. Expect loads of fire and when I say fire, it includes explosions and bombs! Aside from the action-packed scenes, there are also light moments like when Johnny Blaze fights to not transform himself to Ghost Rider and when he started acting crazy just like in the picture (screen cap) shown below:

Although I consider Nicolas Cage as a good actor (I like him at “Face Off” and “City of Angels“), I am really having problems with the way he talks. I honestly don’t understand what he is saying. That’s why most of the time, I just base everything with his actions and he is actually good with that.

Effects-wide, the movie is okay to watch in 3D although it’s not something that will move you from your seat. I think I laugh more though because Nicolas Cage really acted like he is a crazy man here. The other cast also gave a good performance especially the kid played by Fergus Riordan. He reminds me of the kid from The Omen movie.

Johnny Whitworth, who plays as Ray Carrigan, the antagonist who, at the beginning, is human turned into Blackout by the Devil is also something to watch out for. His power is interesting because he can make everything he touches decompose or decaying.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance stars Nicolas Cage,Fergus Riordan, Ciarán Hinds, Violante Placido, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert and Idris Elba. Based on the Marvel Comic, story by David S. Goyer, and directed by Neveldine/Taylor.

Now showing across the Philippines, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
