The first time we saw Wolverine get a spin-off was last 2009 and it was a disappointment. Now, they decided to give him another chance. Can the first X-Men film without the X-Men in the title be X-ceptional? Set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, we first see a damaged and lonely Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) who can’t still move on from killing Jean Grey. Summoned by an old acquaintance, the film takes him to Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he will face a host of unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that…

With all the positive raves at TV, one can get curious on what’s up with Tuhog? The trailer and TV spots only gave a minimal glimpse of what it is about. Can it really bring the audience to a different ride? Before taking the film’s bus ride, let me give the official synopsis of the film: Due to a road rage between two buses, an accident occurs which puts the lives of its passengers in jeopardy. But the ones greatly affected by such event are a middle-aged woman named Fiesta (Eugene Domingo), an old and retired family patriarch Tonio (Leo…

For the film’s main source…

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away! Throughout the years, The Lone Ranger spawned an eight-seasoned TV show from 1949 to 1957,  four films (the last attempt was the Warner Bros TV movie way back 2003 starring Chad Michael Murray), eighteen novels, two newspaper comic strips, hundreds of comic books and a video game by Konami for Nintendo released last 1991. With a budget of $250 million, Disney decided to reboot the famous mask hero for the new generation. Originally, Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Prince of Persia: The Sands of time) was in negotiation to direct but they…

Can you imagine? It was 1995 when the world first witnessed Jesse and Celine’s love story. It took 9 years after to get a follow-up film in 2004 then another 9 years to see them grace the screen again. This is definitely a long wait for the fans of Richard Linklater’s romantic series. With a more matured Jesse and Celine, how was my date with them? Before I proceed to my film review, let me first take you to a walk down memory lane and reminisce the first two films. In Before Sunrise, American tourist Jesse Wallace (Ethan Hawke) and French…

Thanks to Warner Bros. Philippines, I was able to watch last night’s press screening of Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D at SM Mall of Asia. Like its tagline, does the film go big or go extinct? If you haven’t seen the trailer or this is the first time you have heard of the film, let me start-off by giving a teaser of the film. As suggested in its title, it does start beneath the Pacific Ocean and there’s a rim. It’s not an ordinary rim. It’s an underwater portal called “The Breach” where monsters from another universe known as the Kaiju…

This is a very late review of White House Down. Better late than never, right? Early in the film, the tour guide remarked, “this is the building they blew up in Independence Day…” This is to remind the viewers that this film is directed by the same guy who blew up the White House in 1996 when aliens took over Earth. This is the second film of the year with the same premise. The first one was Olympus Has Fallen released last March starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman. Can Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx save this film…

The heat is on! I watched The Heat last Thursday (June 27). As we all know, the buddy cop movie genre has always been dominated by male actors in the past at Hollywood. Now that it features two female comedians, does it have enough heat to be hot in theaters? From director Paul Feig of Bridesmaids, an uptight FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) couldn’t be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. After focusing on Oscar-winning…

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Star Cinema kicks it off by offering the star-studded movie Four Sisters and a Wedding featuring the Philippine’s current top caliber actresses: Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, Toni Gonzaga and Shaina Magdayao. Last Thursday, I was able to watch the film at Robinsons Place Imus. Is it a wedding worth watching or stopping? Directed by box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina, the film shares the story of the Salazar siblings namely Teddie (Toni Gonzaga), the eldest, who works as a teacher in Spain; Bobbie (Bea Alonzo), who is now successful in New York; Alex (Angel Locsin), the…

At the start of 2013, I listed my anticipated films of the year and Man of Steel is on the top of the list. After months of obsessing over trailers, official images, set photos and tv spots, I finally saw it on opening day in IMAX 3D at SM Mall of Asia. As shown in the film’s symbol, can it be S for success in our world or is it just an S? In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination.…
