Badburn

Regarded as one of the Philippines’ best-kept secrets from the fledgling independent music scene, crossover heavy metal-hardcore outfit Badburn (that’s one word for you…) recently released the second official video for their latest single, off their most-recent release Crack The Weakened Surface. Entitled “The Pain Strikes,” the song is undoubtedly one of the strongest – combining thrash-influenced guitar riffs, double pedaled-drumming and guttural vocals, riddled with requisite gang shouts the sub-genre is known for.

Directed by Badburn guitarist David Diaz Abaya (son of the late, great Marilou Diaz- Abaya and younger brother of actor Marc Abaya, who is also vocalist for local band KJWAN), the narrative is a dark and disturbing tale of betrayal and murder, starring Noni Buencamino, and actresses Annicka Dolonius and Lexi Noval, shot on location in parts of Sta. Mesa and Manila.

Badburn, whose first video for the song “Kill At Will,” was also directed by Abaya, has just recently come off a successful stint in Hong Kong wherein the band played for hundreds of local hardcore fans, alongside international acts King Lychee and Shepherds The Weak. Before the completion of their full length Crack the Weakened Surface, the band was busy opening for international acts like world renowned Swedish melodic thrash/death metal act ArchEnemy, and American metal superstars Lamb of God and Testament, aside from touring the nation’s underground circuit, while keeping true to its roots by playing independent productions and Sunday afternoon matinees at the now-defunct Ten02 Bar & BKB in West Ave. in Quezon City. Theirs is an ever-growing fan base that reaches a wide spectrum of kids as young as 15 years old to fans who are now professionals in various industries.

Formed in 1994, Badburn was conceived when vocalist Romero, who was hanging out at a music studio in Paranaque, met together with like-minded music fans who appreciated aggressive music, as well as the hip-hop grooves of the dedicated underground hip-hop scene. The years that followed saw the band go through several line-up changes, and by decade’s end, the band had solidified with the addition of David Diaz Abaya on guitar, former Mass Carnage bassist Hendrick Gonzales, Sin’s Gil Christ Tan on guitar, former Bloodshedd axe-grinder Bike Buick Vinas and rounded-off with the pulverizing drums of Joey Valverde. Its first album, Bound By Blood was a true testament of the local music scene that was bursting its great underground talent.

Though member changes took place at various points of their now-19-year career, Badburn continues to forge a path for the younger bands inspired by their music. Those interested can reach the band through www.facebook.com/pages/Badburn or contact them via mobile 09178145379.
