Backroom’s newest roster of artists called the NYOBG (Not Your Ordinary Boys and Girl) are out to make their own mark in the entertainment industry. The group is composed of Ian Batherson, Carlo Sawit, PJ Go, Avery Paraiso, Benj Bolivar, Kaye Chua, Maui Lumba, and Bon Jovi Osorio.
NYOBG took up various workshops under Direk Laurice Guillen, Mr. Pen Medina, Ms. Annie Quintos of The Company, G-Force and Mr. Boy Abunda to prepare themselves for the big break. Now, the NYOBG members are all excited to build a career in acting, dancing, singing, and hosting.
Ian Batherson is a familiar face on television. He joined in the fifth season of Starstruck and was part of Survivor Philippines : Celebrity Showdown. “I want to grow with my craft. I want to act and do some occasional singing on TV and stage but I know I have a lot to learn.”
Carlo Sawit is a Marketing Management graduate from De La Salle University (DLSU). He has several commercials tucked under his belt – among them are McDonald’s, Century Tuna Hotdog, Fita, and Kremil-S. Now that he is in showbiz, Carlo promises to work hard. “Nahanap ko na ang passion ko. I’m happy acting, I’m happy trying to get in tune with a role, feeling exactly what the character feels. For me it’s like travelling, it’s like an adventure.”
PJ Go is a part-time model and a Marketing Management undergraduate from the University of the East (UE). He has walked the ramp during Fashion Week for brands like Bench and designers like Rusty Lopez. Although he did not come from a showbiz family, he feels like he was born to be in showbiz. “Nasa sa iyo iyon kung magtatagumpay ka sa gusto mo. Kapag pinaghirapan mo ang isang bagay, makukuha mo naman, kahit na ano ang pinagdaanan mo sa buhay.”
Avery Paraiso is a veteran in modelling competitions. In 2009, he joined the Circle of Ten, a famous search for new faces and won along with his twin sister. It has been his dream to become an actor. “As far as I can remember, gusto ko talaga mag-artista. Noong bata pa ako, gusto ko na talaga. When I look at the TV, I would always wonder how it was like being onscreen.” A second year Mass Communication student, Avery believes that his course will help him in his chosen career.
Benj Bolivar is a Sports Science major at the University of the Philippines (UP). Benj is a first runner-up in the Mossimo Bikini Summit of 2010. As part of the NYOBG, Benj is excited over all the opportunities that will open up for him. “Actually, gusto ko i-try lahat pero right now, gusto ko umarte. Kasi iyong mom ko mahilig sa mga teleserye. So minsan, kapag nanonood siya, nanonood din ako. Parang masaya siyang gawin, fulfilling.”
Kaye Chua is the typical ‘beauty and brains’ type of girl. She is a Cum Laude graduate of Hotel and Restaurant Management from the University of Santo Tomas . She won Miss Mandaluyong in 2012 and once joined a university-wide pageant in UST where she placed third. Now that she has finished college, it’s time for her to pursue her dreams. “Kahit ano kaya ko, although mas gusto ko sigurong mag-host,” she says.
Maui Lumba graduated from UST (Hotel and Restaurant Management). He is excited what’s in store for him in showbiz. “I’m just grateful that I’m part of this group along with other great talents. The business has a lot of complications, but I think we can handle it.”
Bon Jovi Osorio was named after a famous singer but he is looking forward to build a career as an actor. He is part of the primetime teleserye Maria Mercedes where he plays Jake Cuenca’s friend. He is also currently seen in Excelente brandy and Nissin Cup Noodles tvcs. “I just hope I have a steady career. It doesn’t have to be big. Even if it’s a slow climb, it’s okay because the faster you get there, the faster you go down. Steady is the word. Steady is consistent.”
