One-Night Stand vs Long-Term Love in “About Last Night”

Columbia Pictures’ new romantic comedy “About Last Night” follows new love on its journey from the bar to the bedroom, and eventually in the real world, where all match-ups get put to the test.

A reimagining of the classic film originally released in 1986 and starring Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins, “About Last Night” stars Kevin Hart (“Grudge Match”), Michael Ealy (“Almost Human”), Regina Hall (“The Best Man Holiday”), Joy Bryant (“Parenthood”), Christopher McDonald (“Billy Madison”) and Paula Patton (“2 Guns”).

The film is directed by Steve Pink (TV’s “New Girl”) from a screenplay was written by Leslye Headland, based on the film “About Last Night” written by Tim Kazurinsky and Denise DeClue. Both films are based on the play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” by David Mamet.

Danny (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant) walk down the street arm-in-arm in Screen Gems' ABOUT LAST NIGHT.

There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship.

Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire?

It’s a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says “I love you” first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or by playing devil’s advocate? (And does it matter if the friends’ romantic lives carry their own problems?)

In the insightful, hilarious romantic comedy “About Last Night,” four Los Angeles singles get a thorough workout in the ups and downs of today’s dating world. On yet another night of playing wingman to his loud-mouthed best friend Bernie (Kevin Hart), kind-eyed Danny (Michael Ealy) meets Debbie (Joy Bryant), a beautiful, smart and successful woman who is as skittish about relationships as he is. When the chemistry proves to be undeniable, they end up falling into bed together that night …then another night, and another night.

Against the advice and warnings of Bernie, not to mention Debbie’s precocious bestie Joan (Regina Hall), Dan and Debbie make an attempt to navigate life as a couple. What these starry-eyed lovers soon find is that despite their good intentions and genuine feelings for each other, what started out as a casual and intoxicating intimacy quickly falls prey to the usual trappings of togetherness and monogamy.

Between sex, exes and texts, “hey baby” versus “how was your day?,” and dealing with the holidays — not to mention all that owning a pet implies — “About Last Night” puts modern relationships under the microscope, and comes up with a laugh-filled, romantic and highly entertaining take on coupledom.

Opening soon across the Philippines, “About Last Night” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
