Weber Shandwick and NGO partner Operation Smile emerged as winners at the 49th Anvil Awards in the Philippines, during a ceremony held at Solaire Resort and Casino in Paranaque. The team took the Anvil Award of Merit for Children’s Health Advocacy for their work on the campaign, “The Journey Home.”
Operation Smile is a worldwide private volunteer medical services organization that provides reconstructive surgery and related health care to children and young adults afflicted with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. The campaign marked the charity’s 30th anniversary.
The Journey Home brought Operation Smile co-founders Dr. William Magee and wife Kathy Magee back to the Philippines, where their charity work first began. Together with volunteer medical professionals from all over the world, Operation Smile provided life-changing reconstructive surgeries to more than 1,500 Filipino children and young adults in 24 days through eight surgical mission sites across the country.
Weber Shandwick provided PR and communications support to raise public awareness both of the mission and of cleft problems and facial deformities.
Roberto Manzano said, “The project was a fruit of generosity and kindness of volunteers from the medical, donor, administrative and logistical support all the way to the creative and PR assistance. This triumph at Anvil Awards is an inspiration and a great way to give back the project’s success to all our volunteers and donors in supporting this worthy cause.”
