The competition is on! Nominations are now open for the 2nd Sarihay Media Awards. Outstanding environmental journalists and broadcasters will once again be recognized for their inspiring and fearless reportage at the annual competition happening in June.
The Sarihay Media Awards, organized by the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), is the first and only award-giving body that pays tribute to media practitioners who promote the preservation of mother earth and protection of mankind through responsible news reporting on print, television, radio, and the internet.
The term Sarihay was coined from the Filipino phrase, “Samu’t saring buhay” which aptly describes the colorful diversity of life on earth.
“FPE is excited for the second run of the Sarihay Awards and we encourage journalists to send in their stories and documentaries. This year, we are expecting more entries of truly inspiring and compelling materials. We envision the Sarihay to be the biggest showcase for environmental journalists and broadcasters,” shares Godofredo T. Villapando, Jr., Executive Director of FPE.
All Filipino media practitioners and bloggers are invited to send in their published works on environmental issues. This year’s awards has 15 recognitions across print, TV, radio, and online channels. All entries should have been published or aired between January 1 and December 31, 2015 to qualify for the competition.
FPE hopes that the recognition would encourage more writers, reporters, and bloggers to continue bringing the often-overlooked environmental protection and biodiversity conservation issues to the attention of the government, decision-makers, and the public raising awareness and understanding on these concerns.
“Last year, we awarded some very powerful materials. Like a TV documentary exposing an illegal logging activity, an investigative report on the urgent state of our mangroves, stories on disaster preparedness and our rich marine life. These are the stories that compel Filipinos to be involved and take action in preserving mother earth,” Villapando adds.
Entries and entry application forms for the 2nd Sarihay Media Awards may conveniently be sent through email. FPE has formed a Technical Review Committee represented by the government, selected non- profit groups, and the academe. A distinguished board of judges will review all entries to select the most outstanding based on a given criteria. Winners will receive the Sarihay plaque of appreciation, a cash prize, and an exposure trip to an FPE-supported project area.
FPE is a non-profit organization that works with the government, private sector, and civil society towards effective biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Through its grants and programs across the country, the foundation envisions communities caring responsibly and living fully in harmony with their environment.
