Balitang America, a daily news program produced by the ABS-CBN North America News Bureau shown on TFC and ANC worldwide, local affiliate stations and livestreamed on BalitangAmerica.tv, won a 37th Annual Telly Bronze Award through East Coast Correspondent Don Tagala’s feature, “Ancient Philippine Gold in NYC”, under the category Online Video, History.

From September 2015 to January 2016, the Asia Society in New York and Ayala Museum of the Philippines presented what The New York Times described as “a gorgeous and historically intriguing exhibition” called, “Philippine Gold: Treasures of a Forgotten Kingdom”.   It featured a generous sample of spectacular works of gold primarily discovered over the past 40 years on the Philippine islands of Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.  These dazzling works were made by goldsmiths from societies that existed more than half a millennium before Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippine archipelago in 1521.

Tagala – who has previously won several Tellys – showcased the spectacular works of gold that included jewelry, exquisite regalia, ritualistic objects, ceremonial weapons, lavish ornaments and even funeral masks.  The Philippines has the second largest gold deposit in the world and as Asia Society revealed, these natural resources were readily exploited by the local people between the 10th and 13th centuries.  The sophisticated treasures are a testament to a once flourishing but now lost cultures in the Philippines.

The winners for the 37th Annual Telly Awards have been selected out of over 13,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is a premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.
