Learn about life, love, history, humanity, and compassion from the eyes of a 105-year-old woman who left her country to live in the Philippines in “Curiosity, Adventure & Love,” airing this Sunday (March 19) on ABS-CBN.
The special documentary film immortalizes the vivid memories of humanitarian Jessie Lichauco, who personally recounts how she boldly went to the arms of chance to pursue a colorful and meaningful life in a foreign nation that she now considers her home.
From following her heart and marrying Filipino Marcial P. Lichauco in the early 1930’s, to opening up their temporary shelter to war refugees during World War II, Jessie tells all in this documentary co-written and produced by her very own granddaughter – freelance journalist Sunshine Lichauco de Leon – together with filmmaker Suzanne Richiardone.
When asked what inspired her to do a film about her grandmother’s journey, Sunshine said in an interview on ANC’s “Headstart with Karen Davila” that she wanted to share her grandmother’s memories, which she believes are full of life lessons.
“My grandmother remembers everything with clarity and detail. Growing up I would watch people listen to her stories, I would see their reactions, and they were always fascinated and wanted to know more. As I grow older and people continue to visit her, I realized she is a great character to get people interested in the history of the Philippines. There is so much she has to share. Her memories are the best way to bring that history alive and share it with people on screen.”
“I watched her humanity, her compassion, her way of living, and seeing the world. I thought it was very special and unique and there were a lot of lessons that she offers, simple truths that we usually forget,” she added.
“Curiosity, Adventure & Love” was in competition for the Filipino New Cinema Category in the 2016 World Premieres Film Festival Philippines, and won a Special Jury Prize for documentary. The docu film airs on ABS-CBN as part of its month-long celebration of Women’s Month.
