At least four top scholars out of SM Foundation, Inc.’s (SMFI) 256 graduate scholars of Batch 2017 said that they want to be tomorrow’s Henry Sy, Sr. – not as mall magnates, but as builders of sustainable communities where people can live self-sufficiently.
SM Founder Henry Sy, Sr. had said that “the distance between you and your dream is your imagination and your willingness to work hard.” Mr. Sy had very humble beginnings. What he lacked in wealth at the beginning he made up for with dreams.
Just like “Tatang”, future engineer Jovic Zapanta dreams of building a sustainable, eco-friendly, and livable city someday. His credentials somehow proves that he can make this work. Jovic has amassed quite a number of medals throughout his student years that these practically covered walls in their humble home. As an SM scholar, he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in BS Civil Engineering at Cebu Institute of Technology and won the Most Outstanding Civil Engineer Award for 2016.
While most people get easily intimidated with mathematics, teacher-to-be Rizza Katrina Paler lives and breathes it. In fact, she is fascinated by how math applies to the real world. It is this love for numbers and equations that Kat intends to share as an incoming teacher, hoping to produce more math wizards for the future and eventually create a culture of skillful problem-solving and abstract thinking. Kat graduated summa cum laude with a degree in BSED at the Holy Angel University in Pampanga.
Rey Buyco, Jr. – cum laude graduate of Accountancy – was abandoned by his father at an early age, leaving him and his mother to fend on their own, even living on the streets where they experienced sleeping on cold concrete at some point. When eventually orphaned, he was forced to live with relatives, exposing him to physical and mental abuses. Inspired by his mother and fueled by his dreams, he sought for and received an SM scholarship. Today, he is teaching at his alma mater, Asia Pacific College where he graduated cum laude and dreams of being able to give back to the community the way Tatang does.
Somewhere in the back offices of SM is an employee named Anna Shannen Olape, who is working hard to support herself for a law degree after graduating magna cum laude in BSBA Management Accounting at Liceo de Cagayan University. Her dream of becoming a lawyer stems from her experiences as a young girl who was bullied because of her poverty. As a lawyer, she believes she can give a voice to the underprivileged the way Mr. Sy gave hers to become who she is today.
SMFI’s scholarship program started in 1993, and has since produced over 3,000 college graduates. For this school year, SM Foundation’s scholarship program has 256 graduates, of which 73 or 28% are Latin honorees and with academic distinction. It thrives on a mission to help underserved Filipinos improve their lives according to the values of leadership, integrity, hard work, innovation, sustainability, and accountability.
SM Foundation also currently supports 1,644 technical-vocational scholars to date as a practical alternative to college education for the youth to acquire skills and find livelihood sooner to help lift their families out of poverty.
