Indie-alternative trio Oya Paya dropped their next single, “Where Is The Line” via Umami Records last Friday (November 9).
Gleefully bouncing between psych-rock melodies and 90s Brit-indie intonations, “Where Is The Line” unabashedly brings the Liverpool-based band’s stand-out approach to the saturated indie table once more in all its refreshing quirkiness, one that has rightfully won over music critics in Europe.
“The birth of the song came from a happy accident that happened in a rehearsal during a time when all 3 of us were running out of steam with our own individual commitments,” the trio says. “We were going through a period in our lives that made us question if our generosity was being taken for granted. While the lyrical aspect of the song tells a story of being taking advantage of, the composition was crafted with happy and uplifting overtones to mask the sense of irony.”
Oya Paya’s self-titled debut EP, ʊyə paɪyə (pronounced oh-ya-peh-ya), has made critical waves. Airplay on Dave Monks BBC Radio Merseyside rotation, Alive & Amplified, and Reprezent Radio gave way to a slew of praise from digital publications, with The Burning Ear praising its “clever wordplay and strong melodic hooks (that) will have Jamie T fans doing a double-take.” UK Hype Machine publication Cougar Microbes hailed its “mix of whispered lullabies, international mish-mash of chord changes and mischievous demeanour,” a fitting stripped-back gem that rounds up the band’s fresh spin on indie rock in their debut offering.
