Klook uncovers Filipinos’ love-hate relationship with solo travel

From family vacations, barkada getaways, or office outings, travel has long been considered a group activity. But travel trends are changing: in recent years, more people have embraced solo travel to satisfy desire for alone time. To investigate this growing phenomenon, Klook, a world-leading travel activities and services booking platform, commissioned a Solo Travel study conducted by YouGov, which found that the vast majority of travelers are interested in hitting the road alone – regardless of age, gender, or nationality.

Klook’s Solo Travel study polled close to 21,000 respondents across 16 markets and found that 76% of them have either traveled alone or are considering it. In the Philippines, travelers showed great interest in traveling alone with 76% saying that they have either done solo travels or will be willing to do so in the future.

Filipinos travel solo to take a break from work and for ‘me-time’

When asked about their reasons for flying solo, majority of Filipino respondents stated taking a break from their day jobs and from their normal, day-to-day routine as their primary motivation. In addition, they also said they wanted to enjoy uninterrupted ‘me time’ or reward themselves, which suggests that travelers value their independence more than ever.

Fear of loneliness ranks the top concern for Filipino solo travelers

Of course, not everyone is ready to explore alone. Klook’s survey also uncovered a love-hate relationship with solo travel: many travelers said they are interested in hitting the road alone, but simultaneously had reservations about potentially feeling lonely. In fact, 49% of the Filipino survey respondents who wanted to travel solo said a ‘fear of loneliness’ has been the biggest hurdle. Aside from loneliness, Filipinos cited planning and booking the itinerary on their own and concerns about safety as their other apprehensions for traveling solo.

“Seeing how Filipinos’ travel interests are broadening from going on group trips to solo trips is definitely an exciting observation. However, we also discovered their love-hate relationship with solo travel because even if they crave for their own personal time, Filipinos are still worried about being lonely while traveling alone.” says Michelle Cruz, Marketing Lead of Klook Philippines. “With the thousands of activities available on Klook, Filipinos can select which activities are perfect for their solo travel plans and discover that traveling alone does not have to be lonely. We hope more Filipinos will be more empowered to explore more places and enjoy their alone time confidently while finding the whole solo travel experience to be fulfilling.”
