An advanced screening of the documentary “Our Power,” hosted by veteran journalist Che-che Lazaro, was recently held at the Far Eastern University Institute of Technology.
“Our Power” is a 30-minute investigative piece produced by Probe Productions that looks into the socio-environmental and policy context of the Philippines’ dependency on coal as a major energy source, and how the industry affects the climate and the lives and future of Filipinos.
Regarding energy sources, Lazaro asked: “Do you want it cheap and dangerous, or expensive and safe?”
This was examined through the lens of communities in Lamao in Bataan, Naga City, and Negros Island, who are adversely affected by coal-fired power plants operating nearby.
“Aside from the destruction of the environment, it is important to look at the effect on the common Filipino,” Lazaro said.
The documentary comes at a time when awareness and education about climate change is much needed. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, the worst of which are experienced by the poorest sectors of society.
After the film viewing, a panel of experts from different sectors shared their insights about the documentary. The panelists included Rodne Galicha of The Climate Reality Project Philippines; Derek Cabe of the Coal-Free Bataan Movement; Dr. Romana Delos Reyes of the Coal-Free Negros Movement; Dr. Renzo Guinto from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; and Atty. Pete Maniego of the Climate Change Commission.
“Our Power” will be aired on GMA News TV on April 14 at 5:00 p.m.
