Filipino-Australian singer-songwriter grentperez has revealed a flirtatious new track “Cherry Wine“. The song was co-written by grentperez in his bedroom over Zoom with Dan Henig (ZAYN, Noah Cyrus, Monster X) and produced by Linden Jay (Doja Cat, Joji, Lion Babe). A swaying, laid back tune that paints the perfect picture of the beginnings of a summer romance, “Cherry Wine” is set to win over the hearts of new listeners
across the globe.
On the inspiration behind the track, grentperez shares, “I’m a bit of a hopeless romantic at heart and somewhere in the back of my head I have a few rom-com scenes and moments from TV built up that play over constantly that I subconsciously look back to when I write songs like this. For Cherry Wine I’d probably be able to pin it down to some classics like 50 First Dates, Midnight In Paris and maybe even She’s All That which were on my mind when writing it, with me imaging I was a part of the film in some way.”
Music lulls us into a meditative state. It allows us to relax, reflect, and, ultimately, recharge. Independent singer, songwriter, and producer grentperez unlocks this place—whether in the studio, on stage, or under the watchful eye of the computer camera in his childhood bedroom. Generating over 30 million YouTube views and amassing over 3 million streams to date, his handcrafted D.I.Y. pop instantly soothes and transports listeners into another headspace “On days where I don’t feel good, I’ll pick up a guitar, and it just makes me feel better,” he shares. “I heavily believe in everything I sing. Whatever it is, I try to put myself in a position to relate and fully immerse myself in all of the words.”
As if by fate, he immersed himself in music during his childhood. Growing up as the youngest of three kids in a Filipino family, he listened to The Eagles, The Beatles, and Queen with his dad before moving on to the likes of Musiq Soulchild. A diligent YouTube search might even unearth videos of a six-year-old grentperez on the microphone! Eventually, he received his first nylon string acoustic and taught himself Jeremy Passion’s “Lemonade”, learning chords, shapes, and plucking patterns.
At the end of 2013, he launched his YouTube channel. Under the influence of ASMR queen Alaina Castillo, he introduced his own “sing u to sleep” series highlighted by popular covers which have racked up millions of views.
At the top of 2020, he found himself at a crossroads as a freshman in college. “It was either, ‘FinishUni’ or ‘Do music’,” he recalls. “Guess what I chose?”
On how his parents felt about his decision to leave college to pursue music as a full-time career, he shares, “When I fully dropped out, my parents were surprisingly fine with it, I’d like to think they understand that I wanted to take a risk, and they trust me not to get lost if in the event I’m unsuccessful, I know that they’re my biggest supporters and I’m very very grateful to have them as my parents.”
When asked about the stereotype of Asian parents when it comes to education, he laughs while responding, “That being said, the decision still came with a few “Are you sure?”, “So, You’re not going back to Uni”, “You can still be a doctor” questions and remarks.” While grentperez has no current plans to become a doctor in the near future, he is gearing up to release more original music in the coming months.
Stay tuned for more updates.
