As the year is quickly closing to an end with the month of December, Asian-American singer-songwriter Cindy Zhang would be releasing her very last single of the year with fellow Asian-American artist Ashley Alisha on 3 December 2021, following with an official lyric video on 8 December 2021 on Ashley Alisha and Cindy Zhang YouTube channels.
This year has been one of the busiest years for Cindy in the amount of releases, collaborations and performances that she has participated in. Following her recent performance on 18 November in San Francisco, Cindy will also be performing in Sofar Sounds once again on 11 December in LA, Santa Monica.
Similarly, LA-based singer-songwriter Ashley Alisha has had many accomplishments under her belt. Her voice has been featured in many popular advertisement commercials alongside K-pop groups BlackPink, Brave Girls and AESPA. In addition, Ashley has an impressive songwriting discography, having written many hit songs for K-pop groups LOONA, ITZY and OH MY GIRL.
This would not be the first time that the pair are working together. Cindy shared, “We worked on my single “Finish Line” together and I instantly became a big fan of Ashley’s voice and songwriting. I definitely knew I wanted to collaborate with her in the future.”
About “Hourglass”
Who knew that two artists of a different yet similar calibre would be able to produce such a spectacular piece of work, with Ashley being recognised for her K-R&B genre tunes and Cindy’s R&B neo-soul vibes. Their latest single ‘Hourglass’ blew sparks to a magnificent collaboration.
“Our creative chemistry is constantly growing, and we’re always flooding each other’s DMs with ideas”, Ashley said, elaborating on the musical synergy between the two.
Describing the songwriting process as smooth sailing, Cindy added on, “We wrote the song really fast, and had a lot of fun with the lyrics and production afterwards. Ashley and I are both big fans of The Bachelor/Bachelorette reality shows, so we took breaks from music by discussing what happened on the latest episodes!”
An unhurried and soothing song, “Hourglass” is about a couple with hurting emotions that numb yet they are trapped in a vicious cycle of breaking up and making up. It describes the literal interpretation of an hourglass, a device used to measure the passage of time. As time runs out like flowing sand in a toxic relationship, the lyrics bring out the intended grief of still being with the person that they are still supposedly “in love with”. The song also includes velvety vocals from both singers with jazzy instrumentation in a modern Pop-R&B setting.
Sharing the story behind the song, Cindy said, “Hourglass is about the not-so-glamorous parts of a relationship, and having fights and making up again. I’ve written songs in the past about the start and end of relationships, but Hourglass is the first song I’ve worked on about staying together as a couple.”
Ashley also weighed in on the meaning of the song and the message the duo wished to impart on their listeners. “I think almost everyone has been through it – wanting to start over. There’s been a lot said and unsaid, in relationships that we all regret, and even though time can’t be rewound, we hope the song can help our audience feel more comfortable being vulnerable and honest with their partners in the present.”
‘Hourglass’ will be available on all digital streaming platforms on Friday, 3 December 2021
