Weval shares dynamic new single “Fire”

Critically-acclaimed electronic duo Weval (AKA Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers) teases their forthcoming 4-track EP ‘Changed For The Better‘ with the second single, “Fire“. Conceived in the tour van just before the pandemic hit, “Fire” fuses Weval’s dynamic electronic funk and emotive synth arrangements.

Weval shares, “The initial idea of ‘Fire’ was made by Merijn in the back of a touring van, packed with people around him. We were on route to our final show in Leipzig before the pandemic. We re-recorded synths and drums in the studio and came up with the vocal line. This is the kind of track that was born quickly but we spent ages on details and mixing. We wanted to keep the high energy, without blasting your ears.”

For Weval it goes back to the timeless adage that music is a feeling, inspired by the pure innocence of the emotions and feelings evoked as a child listening to a cassette in the back of a car while on holiday with your parents. Their core influences growing up converge and contrast to produce a perfect balance. Harm listened to more subdued music during the 90’s and early 2000’s. “I always had a true sweet spot for sentimental pop and RnB and from the beginning 2000 hits from N.E.R.D. Aaliyah, Usher and Madonna.” Harm commented. “After some time, I discovered Yonderboi and St. Germain and that opened the door to Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis and the whole world of jazz. So much fun to step into new worlds, I guess the red line between all those things is that the sound was not screaming but more gentle and clean.”

Recently released single and EP title track “Changed For The Better” received impressive support from the likes of The Vinyl Factory, Alfitude and Northern Transmissions who featured it as their “song of the day”. On the road they’ve rocked stages with their five-piece band at a long list of prominent festivals from Nuits Sonores, Lowlands, Primavera, Best Kept Secret and Pukkelpop to Lightning in a Bottle, Rock en Seine, DGTL Amsterdam, Gottwood and many more. In addition to this, their music has been featured on Emmy winning show, I May Destroy You.

In the 8 years they’ve been releasing music together, Weval constantly strive to re-invent themselves, from playing new instruments, to an ever-changing studio workflow. In a world full of turmoil and trauma, ‘Changed For The Better’ offers hope and comfort. Born of the desire for playing live again to a big crowd, the EP is imbued with positivity and a renewed sense of optimism. Here Weval reveal their true nature, revelling in their liberation and setting a clear course for where they’ll go next.
