Globe, along with many other companies, joined the world in the 52nd anniversary celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2022. In line with its theme of “Investing in Our Planet,” Globe is rallying its customers to incorporate sustainable practices in their daily lives and actively care for the environment.

Their progressive urban wear brand 0917 Lifestyle recently collaborated with social enterprise Revolve for a special Sustainable Fashion Line. Using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles, they turned recycled plastics into t-shirts and tote bags.

The sustainable line includes a stylish unisex shirt made from 60% cotton and 40% recycled plastic bottles, with roughly 4 to 6 one-liter plastic bottles each.

A perfect match for the shirt is the tote bag, which is 100% made with three one-liter plastic bottles. This eco-friendly item is an excellent and practical alternative to single-use or disposable plastics such as grocery bags.

“By recycling the RPET bottles, we help reduce the volume of single-use plastics that litter the environment. At the same time, we are able to educate our customers on the value of circularity and how this can apply to even small aspects of our daily lives. With the 0917 Sustainable Line, our customers can better understand how circularity can be applied in their daily lives through conscious buying behavior,” said Apple Evangelista, Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility at Globe.

Circularity is about minimizing waste through reduction, recycling, and reuse. This process starts with design, production, and distribution until the product reaches the user. It includes collecting waste for recycling and re-inserting the product into the system as a raw material.

Aside from the 0917 Sustainable Line, Globe also collaborates with Green Antz Builders to properly dispose and process single-use plastic waste within its office premises. Clean and dry plastics are shredded and brought to the Green Antz facility for further processing and conversion to eco-bricks and eco-pavers.

The company also engages its employees to adopt a zero-waste lifestyle via the WasSUP (‘Wag Sa Single-Use Plastic) education campaign and has banned the use of disposable plastics in its corporate headquarters.

Globe likewise tapped Vending Experts Night and Day Philippines, Inc. (VEND Phils. Inc.) to come out with the first vending machines in the country that operate using the Quick Response (QR) code for cashless and contactless transactions.

These programs and initiatives are in support of Globe’s Climate Action commitment to the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). Globe is the first and only publicly-listed company in the Philippines to commit to setting science-based targets aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius. It is also a participant in the Race to Zero campaign, which aims to halve Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and reduce them to Net Zero by 2050.

Globe supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 12, which ensures responsible consumption and production, and UN SDG No. 13, which underscores the importance of climate action to save lives and livelihood to address climate emergencies. It is committed to upholding the UN Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs.
