Amid the challenges of the pandemic, local government units (LGUs) and local chief executives (LCEs) rose to the task of providing outstanding public service to their constituency. To recognize their exemplary efforts and serve as templates of success for emulation by other LCEs and LGUs, Rex Education launched the Gawad Edukampyon for Local Governance.

The awards celebrate resilience, excellence, and innovation in local governance. The Gawad was made possible in partnership with the Center for Local Governance and Professional Development, Inc. (CLGPD), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Early Childhood Care and Development Council (ECCD), and Department of Education (DepEd)—all of whom share in REX’s mission of championing education for the Filipino learner.

Emphasizing the role of LGU Edukampyons

Rex Education started the Edukampyon agenda with the Filipino learner in mind and heart. To help uplift Philippine education, REX believes it’s not only the educators, learning institutions, and the parents who should be part of the movement. Everyone surrounding the learners has a duty to bear in championing the Filipino learner—and this is the inspiration for the Gawad Edukampyon for Local Governance Awards.

“In the last years that we have partnered with government agencies and LGUs to share in our vision and mission to uplift every learner and our nation, we have seen the undeniable capabilities and contributions of the sector to truly make a difference. As the first responders in matters of health and welfare, they share in the all-important duty of Edukampyons to ensure that our learners are healthy, safe, engaged, challenged, supported, and values-oriented—as all learners are an integral part of the communities they govern and serve,” said Don Timothy Buhain, chief executive officer of Rex Education.

The Gawad Edukampyon for Local Governance Awards serves not only as recognition for exemplary LGUs and LCEs so they may continue the good they are already doing, but also as motivation for others to follow suit.

“May the fruits of this occasion create ripples of excellence across other areas in the country so that the communities we serve, including the very learners we hold closest to our hearts, thrive, excel, and become whole. This is our lifelong commitment—to offer our talents and skills for the greater good—para sa bata, para sa mamamayan, para sa bayan,” said Buhain.

33 exemplar LGUs and LCEs across the country

A total of 33 provinces, cities, and municipalities, and their respective LCEs were recognized for their achievements and innovations during the awarding ceremony held on June 3, 2022 at Novotel, Cubao.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, one of the awardees of the Gawad Edukampyon For Learning Continuity Plan, accepted the award and promised to continue the efforts of the City of Manila to improve the quality of education in the country. (You can trust that the city government will not stop in innovating and generating new ideas to improve the quality of education of every child in Manila.
