PLDT and Smart were recently recognized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) for the group’s valuable contribution to promoting the country’s Quincentennial Commemorations.
In 2021, PLDT and Smart provided connectivity support for NHCP’s full year of activities in line with the 500th anniversary of the Philippines’ role in the first circumnavigation of the world.
Support for virtual celebrations showcasing the rich and colorful Filipino heritage and culture is among PLDT and Smart’s initiatives to empower their customers to pursue their passions and purpose. For over 10 years, the group’s Digital Tourism Program has provided digital solutions to various tourism stakeholders.
“In this digital age, virtual spaces and connectivity are very important in showcasing our country’s rich history and culture. I would like to take this opportunity to thank PLDT and Smart for their support of our Quincentennial Commemorations, which have allowed us to reach a wider audience,” said Dr. Rene R. Escalante, chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and concurrent chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
“We are honored to have been selected as the official connectivity and digital services partner of NHCP to enable more people across the country and all over the world to take part in important milestones of our nation’s history,” says Catherine Yap-Yang, PLDT and Smart First Vice President and Corporate Communications Group Head. “We remain committed to continue our collaboration with the NHCP and NCCA, to promote our country’s rich culture and heritage,” she added.
Among the activities supported by PLDT and Smart were the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) launch of the 5000-Piso Lapu-Lapu Commemorative Banknote and Medal at the BSP Complex in Manila; the Raising of the Philippine Flag in the Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu; and Guiuan’s Quincentennial Trade Fair and Night Market–the Eastern Samar town’s culmination of the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.
Promoting tourism and livelihood programs is a key part of PLDT and Smart’s commitment to helping the Philippines attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), particularly UNSDG 8 which promotes decent work and economic growth.
