As part of Teatro Europa, the annual theatre festival organized by the EU Delegation to the Philippines, and with the support of St Louis University (SLU), the Embassy of Spain and Instituto Cervantes Manila, Tanghalang SLU is staging a hybrid performance of the play “Fuenteovejuna” on August 27th.
“Fuenteovejuna” is one of the most-staged plays of Félix Lope de Vega Carpio. It is a memorable and highly dramatic vindication of the inalienable rights of the individual. In Fuente Ovejuna, the entire village assumes responsibility before the king for the slaying of its overlord and wins his exoneration.
Félix Lope de Vega Carpio (1562-1635) was one of the most outstanding dramatists of the Spanish Golden Age: He wrote as many as 1,800 plays and several hundred shorter dramatic pieces, of which almost 500 pieces are extant. In 1609 he published “Arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo” (“New Art of Writing Plays in This Time”), a poetic treatise in which he defended his own plays and explained his writing method.
This is the second time that St Louis University is collaborating with the EU Delegation to the Philippines and EU Member States’ Embassies and cultural institutes to stage Teatro Europa.
Spanish Chargé d’affaires a.i. Ms. Carmela Barcia, and First Secretary Frederic Grillet of the EU Delegation to the Philippines will attend the onsite performance.
