In the Philippines, June is a month that celebrates freedom in all its forms. Every June 12, Filipinos celebrate Philippine Independence Day along with the global Pride Month event that recognizes the accomplishments and struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the years. But who says freedom, or celebrating it, should end there?

Sun Life Philippines, the country’s leading financial services company based out of Canada, marked June as Financial Independence Month. The company introduced the celebration last 2015 to keep people interested in financial freedom and spark relevant conversations. This year, it aims to empower Filipinos through relevant and engaging content under the message, “Freedom starts with a choice. Kaya mo ‘yan!”

Sun Life is one brand that aims to guide Filipinos toward financial freedom. This financial services company seeks to help clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives. Its team of committed professionals places its clients at the center of its activities as they strive to be the best insurance and asset management company globally.

For decades, the company has put the Filipinos’ welfare at the heart of its operations, making Sun Life a trusted name in leading the public to a brighter future.

Nowadays, Sun Life Philippines continues its mission of bringing financial freedom and opportunities to Filipinos. The company offers various insurance and investment programs that cater to everyone’s preferences and help them maximize and grow their savings for a brighter future.

Leveraging social media to teach younger generations

Much like with everything in life, financial freedom is a choice. Sun Life found a way to make the necessity of financial freedom relatable to younger generations because age isn’t a factor in one’s journey to achieving it. The company used the power of the internet and turned true-to-life stories that could happen to any everyday Filipino into a short YouTube video that gives Filipinos #FreedomToLiveBrighter.

Since June 19, Sun Life Philippines’ YouTube page has released four new videos by the company’s in-house team of young creatives, exploring the benefits of financial freedom in everyone’s lives. The videos are “Para Sa Akin,” “Ngayon At Bukas,” “Sinag,” at “Kulay.”

“Para Sa Akin” by Bea Aguilera is a quirky story that revolves around Mal, a woman looking for a partner for life after experiencing all the ups and downs of modern dating. But when push came to shove, she realized that staying single wasn’t an issue as long as she was a strong, financially independent woman who knew her self-worth.

Meanwhile, “Ngayon at Bukas” by JC Manzano pulls viewers’ heartstrings as it highlights a father’s undying love for his son by saving up for the present and future. Besides giving his son, Eric, a chance at financial freedom, the father was also supportive regardless of what career path his son took. In the end, Eric was able to stand on his feet and pursue the future he had strived for so long.

Another video about fatherhood is “Kulay” by Casey Borja. It featured a struggling pair, a father and his son, Lucky, running a coffee shop. Despite the financial challenges, the father remained optimistic and turned to color theory to invoke positivity and luck. Meanwhile, his son, who’s on the spectrum, remains his ever-supportive partner. Together, they discover the benefits of an insurance package and how it can turn their lives around.

Last but definitely not least is “Sinag” by Mei Solis. The short video stars Ligaya and her mother, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). While in the Philippines, Ligaya played various online games with her partner, Mikee. Before her birthday, she blurted her secret to her mother–that she’s queer. Eventually, Ligaya and her mother found the freedom to express themselves and financially, creating a deeper bond between mother and daughter.

Through these #FreedomToLiveBrighter videos, Sun Life Philippines shows that everybody can choose how they should live, especially with their finances. And with the right life partner to support their efforts, nothing can stop them from living their lives to the fullest. You can watch these videos via www.sunlife.co/KayaMoYan.

Complementing the films are free learning modules designed for those who wish to build their financial portfolio. You can check these out via www.sunlife.co/Financial-Independence-Month.

In the meantime, there are other videos available on Sun Life Philippines’ YouTube channel to encourage more viewers to explore the company’s various services and tread their path toward financial freedom.

Understanding Financial Freedom

Sun Life Philippines’ website defines financial freedom as independence from debts, money shortages, and other economic insecurities. It’s a state where one has already acquired the funds they need to live comfortably while having a sufficient income stream for the future. Financial freedom allows people to have autonomy from work or a support system, like family.

The road to financial freedom can come with many challenges. Fortunately, Sun Life Philippines has numerous capable financial advisors to help guide Filipinos down this path. Ultimately, despite these challenges, the returns one can receive will make it all worth it. And with the right partner, Filipinos will be able to chase their dreams and achieve their goals.
