Matthiaos and Yow share their creative process in making ‘Tayo Sana’

Every artist has a specific process for creating something that showcases their artistry. For instance, some singer-songwriters might begin by brainstorming a song’s lyrics. At the same time, instrumentalists would prefer to start by developing a melody or harmony that can become the foundation for the next trending song.

The title “Tayo Sana” encapsulates the song’s theme of longing and hope for a second chance in a relationship. Asintada artist Jun Matthew Brecio, who’s popularly known by his stage moniker Matthiaos and Filipino vlogger Anthony Jay Andrada, commonly known as Yow, began their creative process to produce their recent collaboration titled “Tayo Sana” from a friendly hangout.

“Naglabas lang siya [Yow] ng gitara tapos nag-hum ako ng melody and chorus. The rest is history,” Matthiaos said.

Yow added that in their process, unlike many composers who begin their creative process by developing tones, riffs, or a mix of both, the pair started playing around with the guitar and the melody to create “Tayo Sana.” Afterward, Matthiaos and Yow worked on the lyrics, with “Ayokong makita kang may bago” being the first to emerge.

“Tayo Sana” is a heartfelt song Matthiaos describes as a “fresh from a break-up” vibe, where the protagonist wishes for another chance with their significant other somewhere down the line. On the other hand, Yow sees the song as an anthem of hopefulness and positivity where the subject looks forward to getting back together with their significant other and achieving that goal.

However, both artists agree that “Tayo Sana” is a personal song that tells a story rather than a conscious effort to make audiences relate to its overall message.

“Very personal ‘to. Hit or miss, basta very proud kami sa ginawa namin. Kinuwentuhan ko lang siya [Yow] at sinulatan niya base doon sa kwento,” Matthiaos said.

From viral hits to doing what makes him happy

One of the most significant lessons Matthiaos learned, apart from going beyond his comfort zone, is the significance of maturing as an artist. “Tayo Sana” is his first time dabbling with an acoustic approach to making music, a departure from his usual rap vibe, which he realized while collaborating with Yow.

Yow and Matthiaos have been good friends for quite some time now, making their collaboration somewhat easy because they are familiar with each other’s personal styles.

According to Yow, their friendship began when CongLincoln Cortez Velasquez, the famous Filipino vlogger behind Cong TV, was looking for a musical platform where Dudut, a member of Team Payaman, could showcase his talents. Matthiaos had sent Cong a message, which then established the bridge between the musician and the vloggers.

“Itong ginawa naming collab namin, it’s part of our friendship, part of our bonding,” Yow shared. They planned it to be a primarily acoustic song but they’re open to having remixes because the believe songs shouldn’t be limited to their initial version only.

“Tayo Sana” is available in all streaming platforms.
