Maya, the #1 digital bank in the Philippines, is reminding everyone to stay vigilant against ‘text hijacking’ scams that use text messages appearing to come from trusted companies. These fake messages often include suspicious links, offering things like vouchers or asking for personal information under false pretenses, such as account updates.
Many of us have learned to be cautious with SMS, only trusting messages from familiar brands. However, scammers have developed a tactic called ‘text hijacking,’ also known as spoofing, to trick even the most careful users. This method manipulates SMS networks to make messages appear as though they originate from legitimate companies.
Scammers use advanced technology to send fake messages that seem to come from trusted sources. These messages may contain phishing links or malware designed to steal your personal information.
How Text Hijacking/Spoofing Works:
- Sender Disguise: Scammers use illegal cell sites to collect phone numbers and, with the help of illegal software, manipulate the sender’s name, making it appear as though the message is coming from a legitimate source.
- The Bait: The fake message often includes an urgent request, such as asking you to update your account, claim a voucher, or upgrade services. This sense of urgency is intended to trick you into taking immediate action.
- Data Theft: Once you click the link, you are directed to a fake website that looks authentic but is designed to steal your personal and financial information, such as passwords, PINs, or account details.
Maya will never send SMS messages with links asking you to log in, provide personal information, or verify your account. If you receive such a message, it’s a text hijacking attempt. Rest assured, Maya’s systems remain fully secure, and no personal data has been compromised.
