Megaworld Lifestyle Malls has signed a Memorandum of Agreement to partner with the Department of Agriculture for its urban farming programs in its townships, commencing with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edible Garden in its McKinley Hill township last March 14.

Community Edible Garden is a first-of-its-kind sustainability project by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and Megaworld Corporation’s “MeGreen” campaign, to promote urban agriculture aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to empower the community to acquire new knowledge and skills while fostering care for the environment and teaching school children the value of food security.

Mercedita Sombilla, Department of Agriculture Undersecretary, and Dr. Gerald Glenn Panganiban, Bureau of Plant Industry, led the Memorandum of Agreement signing alongside Rene Arnobit, Vice President and Head of Mall Operations Support Department, Tyrone Tan, Assistant Vice President and Cluster General Manager, and Jane Cateciano, Megaworld Estate Senior Manager, the key representatives of Megaworld Lifestyle Malls.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Community Edible Garden, following the Memorandum of Agreement signing, was held at the McKinley Hill Botanical Garden and it was attended by Michael Lao, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’ Assistant Vice President for Corporate Operations Group, and Beda Cabanos, McKinley Hill’s General Manager.

Edible Garden will serve as an environmentally friendly urban greenhouse project where communities can gain immersive experience in growing their own crops. This project aims to eventually motivate neighboring communities to engage in simple and efficient green programs with the assistance of the Department of Agriculture’s training sessions and provided farming materials.

Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and Megaworld Corporation both seek to inspire individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, creating a sense of community camaraderie while advocating for the responsible stewardship of our planet’s resources through engaging eco-friendly activities like urban farming. This commitment extends beyond the launch of the Edible Garden project as Megaworld continues to explore innovative ways to promote environmental sustainability and foster a culture of conservation across its properties and within the communities it serves.
