David Sutton, Sustainability Solutions Lead for Lenovo Asia Pacific, discusses the company’s comprehensive ESG strategy during his presentation at the ITIP 22nd National Conference.

Lenovo continues to accelerate its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence, building on a proven track record of integrating sustainability into every aspect of its business — from product design and packaging, to supply chain operations and customer solutions.

With more than a decade of sustainability reporting, Lenovo has set ambitious near- and long-term goals, including a commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard.

Journey to Net-Zero

On the path toward its 2050 net-zero goal, Lenovo has set 2030 reduction targets that include:

  • 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from a FY 2018/19 baseline.
  • 35% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from use of sold products.
  • 66.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services.
  • 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from upstream transportation and distribution.

Lenovo engineers have also pioneered innovations such as low-temperature solder (LTS) technology, which has reduced 10,000 tons of CO₂ emissions since 2017.

Driving a Circular Economy

Lenovo is embedding circularity in its products and services. Since 2005, the company has used over 100 million pounds of net recycled plastic in its products and packaging. Through Asset Recovery Services (ARS), Lenovo refurbishes, reuses, and recycles end-of-life IT assets, helping customers reduce waste and security risks.

By FY 2025/26, Lenovo targets to:

  • Ensure 100% of PC products contain post-consumer recycled content materials.
  • Achieve 76% repair rate for returned PC parts, extending product lifecycles.

Smarter, More Sustainable Packaging

Lenovo’s packaging strategy prioritizes waste reduction without compromising protection. Key milestones include:

  • Eliminating 3,737 metric tons of packaging consumption by weight since 2008.
  • Reducing packaging weight by 30% through bamboo fiber use in ThinkPad X1 retail boxes.
  • Cutting 54 tons of plastic tape annually from ThinkPad packaging.
  • Commitment that 90% of PC products’ plastic packaging will come from recycled materials by FY 2025/26.

Participants of the ITIP 22nd National Conference listen as Lenovo Asia Pacific’s David Sutton highlights key innovations and initiatives driving Lenovo’s path toward a more sustainable future.

Partnerships also play a key role: Lenovo works with Intel®, ranked Barron’s #1 Most Sustainable Company in America, to integrate bamboo and sugarcane materials into ThinkPad X1 packaging.

Building More Sustainable Supply Chains and Customer Solutions

Lenovo is also transforming its global supply chain, with a goal of removing 1 million tons of GHG emissions by FY 2025/26. Partnerships with industry leaders in renewable energy and sustainable transport — such as DB Schenker, Lufthansa Cargo, and Maersk — are reducing CO₂ emissions across shipping routes.

For customers, Lenovo offers Sustainability Solutions designed to help organizations lower their IT footprint. These include:

  • Bulk packaging and reduced-carbon transport services.
  • CO₂ Offset Services verified by global climate action standards.
  • TruScale as-a-Service models, which reduce overprovisioning and e-waste.
  • Asset Recovery Services diverted 31,532 metric tons of products for recycling and reuse in 2023.

A Smarter, More Sustainable Future

“Smarter technology for all builds a more resilient way forward,” said Michael Ngan, President and General Manager of Lenovo Philippines. “As the world faces growing complexity and uncertainty, Lenovo is committed to innovation that not only drives progress but also ensures long-term value for people, communities, and the planet.”

Lenovo’s global sustainability commitment was further highlighted this week at the I.T. Interaction Philippines Inc. (ITIP) 22nd National Conference, held on November 13–15, 2025 as David Sutton, Sustainability Solutions Lead at Lenovo Asia Pacific, delivered a talk titled “Lenovo’s Path to Sustainability: Innovation, Responsibility and Change”.

Lenovo’s comprehensive ESG strategy reflects its belief that technology can deliver both business performance and lasting impact, as it continues to align with global sustainability standards and empower organizations to reach their own ESG goals.
