The hi-fi philosophy driving Cambridge Audio’s global evolution

For over 50 years, Cambridge Audio, a distinguished UK manufacturer of high-fidelity electronic components, has operated under one simple yet powerful philosophy. As Mr. Calvin Yeung, Cambridge Audio APAC Sales explained, the essence of their mission is encapsulated in their belief: “Everything is made by music.”

It stems from a profound realization shared with their community. The company once asked its audience on social media about the single most important component in their audio system. While common answers included loudspeakers, CD players, turntables, and streamers, the most defining response was simply “the music.”

“We find one interesting answer is music because we believe that everything starts with music. So, everything we engineer that’s decided in the London headquarters office is made with music [in mind],” Yeung said.

Cambridge Audio’s music-first approach dictates every aspect of their design and engineering, particularly as they expand their global presence. In the Philippines, for example, the company began its partnership with Triyama four or five years ago, capitalizing on the rapid growth of music streaming. They have ensured their products are compatible not just with major global platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, but also with hi-res audio services such as Tidal, Qobuz, and Amazon Music, alongside regional platforms like Q Play Q music in China.

“This year, actually, we have launched quite a few products… starting from the traditional hi-fi we have the CX range… but now we are putting more focus and resources on developing the lifestyle products,” Yeung said.

A key element that makes Cambridge Audio stand out in a crowded market is its commitment to the in-house development of its streaming technology. The core of their streaming products is the proprietary StreamMagic module, which is completely developed by their engineering team in the UK. Unlike many competitors who rely on third-party solutions, this dedication to self-development allows for exceptional agility.

“The StreamMagic module in all our existing streaming products is completely developed by our engineering team in the UK,” said Yeung, which allows Cambridge Audio to react quicker than others. This means they can deliver a regular, quarterly update schedule, quickly fixing bugs and ensuring compatibility whenever a new third-party platform or device—like a new smartphone version—is released.

This focus on rapid adaptability is intertwined with the brand’s shift toward lifestyle products for the modern home, such as the new EVO 150 SE streaming amp and the EO1 streaming speaker. The company understands that the customer’s behavior has fundamentally changed. Today’s hi-fi system must offer more than just pristine audio quality; it must be intuitive and integrate seamlessly into every part of life, supporting sources from traditional vinyl to modern TV streaming services like Netflix and YouTube.

As Yeung summarized, the deciding factor for many customers is “the lifestyle… not just only beauty of the products [and how they] can easily fit into every single wear in your room but also convenience for everyone to use it at your home.”

This convenience, underscored by features like the HDMI ARC connection on their latest models, defines what the company calls the “now day hi-fi.”
