Calling all families and sneakerheads! The animated feature film “Sneaks” is stepping onto the big screen exclusively at SM Cinemas on April 19. It’s a one-of-a-kind adventure made for families, kids, and young adults who live and breathe sneaker culture.
“Sneaks,” distributed in the Philippines by Reality MM Studios, brings the obsession with sneakers to life with a star-studded cast straight from the worlds of sports, music, and fashion. The story follows Ty and Maxine, two mismatched sneakers voiced by Anthony Mackie and Chloe Bailey, who get separated after a wild escape and must journey through the city’s boroughs to reunite. Along the way, they encounter a colorful crew of kicks, from street-smart JB (voiced by Martin Lawrence) to rising baller Edson (Swae Lee), and the villainous shoe-smith, The Forger (Roddy Ricch).
Sneaker fans should be on the lookout! Part of the fun is spotting movie versions of real-life sneaker models cleverly reimagined in animated form.
The film’s soundscape packs as much style as its visuals, with music curated by multi-Grammy Award-nominated producer/artist Mustard—known for his work with Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, and Rihanna. Joining him is jazz great Terrace Martin, a go-to collaborator of Kendrick Lamar, who composed the original score.
In a slick twist, “Sneaks” features custom-designed NIKE characters, Sky and Rayssa, voiced by real-life skateboarding stars Sky Brown and Rayssa Leal. To mark the film’s release, a special “Sneaks” colorway will also drop, giving fans a chance to snag a piece of the movie.
To ensure authenticity, the filmmakers tapped Bobbito García, a pioneer in sneaker journalism and a visionary in street culture. His creative guidance adds a deeper layer of credibility, making “Sneaks” a genuine celebration of the culture.
“We set out to make a one-of-a-kind, animated buddy-comedy with heart about two mismatched shoes that drive each other crazy, set in the world of sneaker culture and hip-hop music,” said Len Hartman, the film’s producer. “It was a tall order, a bit of a marathon, and required a real full-court press by the entire team. Without the proper footwear, we never would have made it. Lucky for us, we had Sneaks.”
“Sneaks” is a film that blends art, entertainment, sports, music, and fashion. It’s authentic, it’s cool, and it’s for everyone. So get ready to go beyond the laces and into a world where every step tells a story.
