The Philippines is a treasure trove of history and culture, with countless landmarks that tell the story of our nation’s journey to freedom. This June, as we celebrate Philippine Independence Day, why not take a road trip to explore some of the country’s most inspiring historical sites?

Visiting historical sites during Independence Day is more than just a trip; it is a meaningful way to retrace the footsteps of our forebears who fought for freedom. These places offer tangible connections to our past, allowing us to reflect on the sacrifices and heroism that shaped the nation. By immersing ourselves in these landmarks, we honor the spirit of independence and gain a deeper appreciation of Filipino identity and resilience. That’s why MPT Mobility has curated a list of destinations ideal for a quick yet meaningful getaway.

Cavite: Aguinaldo Shrine and Bonifacio Trial House

Cavite is rich in revolutionary history. The Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit is where the Philippine Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898. This ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo, the first Philippine president, is preserved as a museum showcasing artifacts from the revolution.

Nearby, the Bonifacio Trial House in Maragondon is where Andres Bonifacio, the Father of the Philippine Revolution, was tried and executed, marking a significant moment in the struggle for independence.

To reach Cavite’s Aguinaldo Shrine and Bonifacio Trial House from Manila via expressway, take the Manila–Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and exit at Kawit for the Aguinaldo Shrine, located along Tirona Highway. After visiting, continue south via Antero Soriano Highway and merge onto Governor’s Drive toward Maragondon, where the Bonifacio Trial House is located in the town center. The full trip can take 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic.

Pampanga: San Fernando Train Station and Death March Memorial

The San Fernando Train Station in Pampanga stands as a powerful testament to one of the darkest chapters in Philippine history—the Bataan Death March. After enduring a grueling march from Bataan, thousands of Filipino and American prisoners of war arrived at this very station in April 1942. Here, they were herded into cramped boxcars and transported to Capas, Tarlac, where the ordeal continued.

Today, the restored train station, along with nearby Death March markers and memorials, serves as a solemn reminder of the immense suffering and sacrifice endured during World War II. Visiting this site honors the resilience and courage of those who walked the path to freedom, ensuring their stories are never forgotten.

To reach this destination, take NLEX northbound and exit at San Fernando. Continue along Olongapo-Gapan Road, turning left onto Lazatin Boulevard under the second flyover. Turn left again onto Capitol Boulevard; the train station and the Death March Memorial are located a few meters across from the Capitol grounds.

Bataan: Dambana ng Kagitingan and Death March Markers

Bataan is home to the iconic Dambana ng Kagitingan or Shrine of Valor, located near the summit of Mount Samat in Pilar. This memorial honors the gallantry of Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. The shrine features a colossal Memorial Cross, standing 92 meters tall, which is the world’s second-largest memorial cross, offering panoramic views of Bataan, Corregidor Island, and Manila Bay.

The site also includes a war museum with relics and paintings commemorating the Battle of Bataan, a pivotal and harrowing chapter in Philippine history. The shrine was commissioned in 1967 and completed in 1970, symbolizing the heroic stand and sacrifices of soldiers during the battle that led to the infamous Bataan Death March.

To get there, take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). You can exit at San Fernando, Pampanga, and then take the Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Gapan-Olongapo Road) to reach Bataan.

Ilocos: Paoay Church, Malacañang of the North, and Bantay Bell Tower

The Ilocos region offers a blend of cultural and historical landmarks. The Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture with its distinct earthquake-resistant design. Malacañang of the North in Paoay was the official residence of former President Ferdinand Marcos and now serves as a museum. The Bantay Bell Tower in Bantay town is a historic watchtower used during the Spanish colonial period, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s colonial past.

To get there, take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), continue onto the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then merge onto the Tarlac–Pangasinan–La Union Expressway (TPLEX) to its end in Rosario, La Union. From there, follow the National Highway north through La Union and Ilocos Sur to Ilocos Norte. In Ilocos Norte, visit the iconic Paoay Church, then head to nearby Malacañang of the North in Paoay. To see the Bantay Bell Tower, drive back south to Bantay, Ilocos Sur, just beside Vigan.

Historical Sites to Consider Within Metro Manila

If you’re spending Independence Day in Metro Manila or prefer to stay within the city, the NLEX Connector provides a convenient and faster route into central Manila, with easy access to key areas like España Boulevard and Magsaysay Boulevard. This makes it simple to visit some of the city’s rich historical and cultural spots without straying far from the main roads. Whether you’re coming from the north or south, you can use the same Easytrip RFID on the NLEX Connector for a smoother trip.

In just minutes from the NLEX Connector exits, you can explore Intramuros, the iconic walled city rich with Spanish colonial heritage, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old churches. Nearby is Rizal Park, the nation’s premier historical park, where you can honor Dr. Jose Rizal amid lush gardens and monuments. Close by is the National Museum Complex, home to priceless Filipino art and cultural artifacts. Choosing the NLEX Connector is a great option if you want to extend your Independence Day road trip with a quick and easy detour to Manila’s historic core. Either way, you’re never far from the city’s rich history if you want to cap off your journey with a memorable visit to these iconic sites.

Cebu: Lapu-Lapu Shrine, Magellan’s Cross, and Basilica Minore del Santo Niño

The Lapu-Lapu Shrine on Mactan Island honors the native chieftain who famously defeated Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan in 1521, a pivotal event in Philippine history symbolizing early resistance to foreign colonization. Just a short drive away in Cebu City, Magellan’s Cross stands as a historic marker of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines, housed in a small chapel near the city’s center. Nearby, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño holds the oldest religious relic in the country—the statue of the Santo Niño, which has been venerated since the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century.

To visit these sites, take the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) and exit toward Mactan Island for the Lapu-Lapu Shrine. For Magellan’s Cross and Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, continue to Cebu City via the Marcelo Fernan Bridge or the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge, and head to the historic downtown area accessible via Osmeña Boulevard and P. Burgos Street.
