The Philippine music scene has recently welcomed back a powerhouse with the return of Zelle. Born Jeazell Grutas, the OPM artist’s distinctive voice is etched into the memories of many OPM fans, thanks to hits like “Sabihin,” “Akala Mo Lang,” “’Hindi Na Sana,” and the memorable vocals she lent to Gloc-9’s groundbreaking protest track, “Upuan.”
After a thirteen-year hiatus spent living in Sweden, Zelle has officially returned to the Philippine music landscape as a solo artist, bringing with her an indie alternative sound that is now infused with deeper maturity and intentionality. This comeback is not merely a nostalgic echo but a courageous new chapter, anchored by her latest single, “Martir.”
“I became unapologetically me. I’m more intentional now. Hindi na ito music lang, but about sending a message, especially to women. I want my songs to speak strength and truth,” she said,
Zelle admits that her comeback was sparked by a difficult period where she “fell into depression” and experienced thoughts that allowed her to relate to late and great musicians Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell. This low point provided an unexpected clarity, leading her to realize that the opposite of depression is expression. The pandemic, with its array of online gigs, allowed her to see a reflection of her passionate self on screen, prompting her to ask: “What would Zelle do outside of her depression?” Now, she is harnessing that drive, using her music as a tool for healing.
Compared to her earlier work, her sound has evolved from being purely emotional to something more reflective and introspective. She notes the significant changes in the music industry, particularly the rise of social media and streaming, which she views as a double-edged sword. While challenging, the new landscape grants independent musicians like herself greater freedom and, crucially, more control over the business side of their art, ensuring the sustainability of their passion.
“My lyrics are more psychological now. My songs have become healers. They’re not just emotional anymore, they’re meant for reflection, for finding yourself again through music,” the OPM artist said.

Leading this new body of work is the single “Martir,” a raw and honest exploration of anxious attachment and toxic love. While the song was written years ago, around the same time as her hit “Sabihin,” Zelle felt that now was the perfect time for its release, especially with the upcoming single “Liberate Me” soon to follow. She shares that the track came from a place of losing herself for love, craving reassurance, and crossing boundaries, with the “insane laugh” in the song representing the ensuing madness.
Zelle believes “Martir” resonates today because heartbreak songs are eternally relevant, serving as a constant, necessary form of therapy for listeners. On this comeback, the OPM artist has taken on a multi-hyphenate role, acting as the executive producer, music producer, and stylist for her releases. This “indie life” is demanding, but she finds it deeply fulfilling, crediting her calm and supportive bandmates and production team for ensuring everything aligns for this intentional return.

Apart from Zelle’s metamorphosis into a strong woman who’s unapologetically genuine to herself and her emotions, her journey was made more purposeful with the help of her bandmates, John Abiathar De Leon on drums, Archie Salvador on guitars, Chester Ventura on violin, and Jing Gonzales on bass guitar.
“Back in Sweden, I was ready to face it all alone with just my guitar. Then out of nowhere, these incredible bandmates showed up, magkaka-iba ng trip. Some are free spirits, some are deeply spiritual, but all of us share one unshakable truth: we live for music. That’s the bond, that’s the fire. Couldn’t ask for a better crew to ride this journey with,” Zelle said.
Despite the ambitious nature of her return, Zelle is approaching this new chapter with grounded wisdom, prioritizing enjoyment and mental peace over industry expectations. Her main goal is simply to “enjoy and stay grounded,” relying on her close team to keep her centered whenever frustrations arise. To her long-time fans who patiently waited and to new listeners just discovering her depth, she offers a powerful invitation to share in her journey of recovery. She simply says, “Guys, I’m back. Let’s bleed and heal together. Feel that pain until it hurts no more.”
“I want to be remembered as a pure-blooded Filipina who inspires women to be independent and unafraid,” Zelle said.
“Martir” is now available at Spotify. Music video coming soon.
