Singer-songwriter Adjeng, who last year released eight digital singles, is making sure 2022 is not just a period to continue what she had been doing, but more of one to showcase significant progress in her act. Thus, her latest single “More Than A Little,” is quite a cool departure from her previous pop releases, with its touch on classic R&B sound presented in relevantly current form.
“I wrote “More Than A Little” in January 2022, welcoming not just a brand new year, but also a fresh sound with the melody and lyrics I wrote myself, laced with old school R&B sensibilities. While I have dabbled mostly in pop, I have to say that 90’s R&B made a huge impact on me, and I wanted to reflect that in this song,” said the lady singer who fronted for the bands Sipol and Wink in the early stages of her career, before finally deciding to go solo last year.
That decision spawned singles with lyrics she wrote and released one after another. It’s no exaggeration that she actually put out a song every month that by the end of 2021, she already accumulated an album’s worth of songs.
This year, she raised the bar by committing to record songs she composed herself, both melody and lyrics. “Rollercoaster” was the first of these. This follow-up is more than just a follow through, but one that offers a strong statement about true love.
Adjeng shared, “More Than A Little” is a love song I wrote about the value of putting in extra time and effort in love. It’s about ‘going all in,’ giving it all that you’ve got. It’s actually a reflection of my own personal thoughts on love.”
She further explained, “Life is a rollercoaster, but like Love, it can be a sweet ride when you know you didn’t hold back in living it. In anything that involves love, there are expectations and realities. I think we always have to recognize what we want and need, and be honest. If you think about it, true love really is in the details, the small, seemingly insignificant and humble moments.”
She continued, “When we start getting complacent about things, we forget the ‘why.’ There’s always an extra mile worth taking when it comes to love, and that’s what I write and sing about in my new song ‘More Than A Little.’”
Adjeng’s routine to usher her solo career was for her “a great creative exercise and opportunity to catalog and flex my creative muscles.” She began her run with “O Sige Lang,” then quickly followed it up with other songs she collaborated with a songwriting partner or a tunesmith-mentor she longed to work with: “If Only,” “Say No,” “Walk On Water,” among others.
Always the woman with a plan, Adjeng made sure this year is going to be different and “Rollercoaster” marked a “genuine all-new beginning” for her, being able to craft her own materials. With “More Than A Little,” it’s a proof she can do it again and there’s actually more to come. She’s enjoying doing singles but there is a possibility of releasing a full album.
“I pray that listeners will resonate with ‘More Than A Little.” It’s a special song from my heart and I truly enjoyed writing and recording this single,” she stressed.
An official music video for the song is in the works.
Asked about her view of the current situation as the country recovers from the pandemic, Adjeng, as you can expect, shares positive thoughts: “Happy to note that there are many good things happening for the music industry these days, like seeing there is government-funded music research happening, a great effort to help our industry. And there is definite progress happening with the Philippine Creative Industries Development Bill.”
She added, “I personally have been taking time to squeeze in learning new things through education websites like Artkipelago, which aims to inspire and encourage creatives to sharpen their skills in their craft even online. Releasing music online is never easy, but on my end, and true to form, I just want to keep going.”
“More Than A Little” is out today June 3rd and is available in all digital streaming platforms.
