On January 19, 2024, Malaysian indie-pop band Blue Nan•young released its sophomore single, “Cache”, a contemplative song with pensive vocals and smooth, almost soaring instrumentals that call on the listener to reflect on the costs of a slowly deteriorating, directionless relationship.
The song has vocalist and lyricist Nate Tan musing on when words begin to fail to prop up a relationship, either through a breakdown in communications – “talking in circles” – or because trust has been broken one too many times. “Explain yourself now why so cruel?” he pleads with the other person, who has become cold and distant. However, even as fellow vocalist Mikha Chan brings in more questions, asking if this relationship is even worth saving, Nate seems to have made up his mind. All he can do now, for the sake of his sanity, is “clear cache”, and remove the other person from his memory.
“Cache” is Blue Nan•young’s second single after its first release, “30/FLIRTY” in September 2023.
Besides “Cache”, Blue Nan•young has several other releases lined up, it’s next synthpop single “(won’t) wait for u” is a collaboration with Singaporean RnB/soul artist Ahmadul Amin. The band remains hard at work penning and recording new material and hopes to eventually pack its singles into an EP tentatively slated for sometime this year.
“Cache” is distributed by independent digital music distribution service Distrokid.
Formed in mid-2023, the KL-based indiepop outfit is a blend of edgy guitar-driven hooks, emotional RnB grooves, and bubbly synthpop. Their songwriting is lighthearted and fun, melancholy and thoughtful, desperate and hopeful – as far as possible, the full experience of life itself. Since their inception, Blue Nan•young has played several shows across the Klang Valley, including a showcase, and is keen on reaching new heights.
The group comprises Mikha Chan on guitars/vocals, Tasneem Bolhassan on bass/vocals, Nate Tan on strings/vocals, Aqmal Shah on guitars, and JJ Michaels on drums.
