Mapúa University is best known for its excellent engineering and architecture programs but did you know that the 100-year-old institution has been expanding its Health Sciences courses and even elevating the way these programs are being taught to students?
With the demands of modern times, enrolling in a Health Science program at Mapúa University is a viable and smart option.
The collaboration between Mapúa University’s School of Health Sciences and Arizona State University (ASU) brings dynamic Bachelor of Sciences degree courses in Pharmacy, Biology, Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Radiologic Technology, and Psychology to Filipino students who aim and dream of treading a career path in healthcare.
“With deep roots in engineering, we want to unite technology and health sciences, transforming the education of future healthcare practitioners and making a positive impact on the healthcare industry,” Lemmuel Tayo, Dean of School of Health Sciences began.
Since 2022, the Mapúa University School of Health Sciences has been collaborating with ASU to bring top-grade Health Sciences education to shape a new generation of healthcare professionals who are globally ready and digitally adept for healthcare innovations and quality patient care.
“I think [the collaboration] is necessary. You need to have a really good partner. ASU is number one in innovation in the United States. Mapúa is number one in innovation in the country. So it’s like an inevitable meetup of two innovative powerhouses [to collaborate on Health Sciences],” Charliemaign Stanley Cruz, Program Chair of Pharmacy, declared.
The collaboration between Mapúa University School of Health Sciences and ASU is a powerful reason enough to enroll in their programs but if you’re looking for more reasons to make this smart choice, here are eight (8) more for you to do so.
Backed by Mapúa’s legacy, powered by two conglomerates. Mapúa is an education partnership supported by two powerful conglomerates in the country – the Yuchengco Group of Companies and Ayala Corporation – that are committed to introduce cutting-edge approach to healthcare education. Mapúa’s School of Health Sciences is in a partnership with Ayala Healthcare Holdings, Inc. (AC Health) that allows students the opportunity to train, learn and immerse at AC Health’s outpatient centers through its Healthway Medical Network (HMN). HMN is also offering scholarship programs to deserving students. In addition, Mapúa’s 100 years of legacy and steadfast dedication to excellence and never-ending quest for innovation continue to evolve and expand. It earned consistent recognition from the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and is also listed among the world’s best HEIs (Higher Education Institution) in QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings.
Haven for Global Learning. Through its collaboration with ASU, the Mapúa School of Health Sciences enables students to become practice-ready global healthcare practitioners through extensive global exposure, world-class health sciences content and advanced knowledge. According to Jomar Adams Ganding, Medical Technology Program Chair at Mapúa School of Health Sciences, they offer Global Signature Courses (GSC) where students in the Philippines get a chance to hear lectures coming from international partners. In addition, Student Global Experience (SGE) is being offered to the students of Mapúa School of Health Sciences made possible through its collaboration with ASU. “With SGE, we bring students to our ASU partner universities abroad wherein they get access to [knowledge and culture in other countries] like an international learning experience. They get the experience of what it is like in the global scenario,” JM Toriaga, Program Chair of the Psychology programs, explained.
State-of-the-art, immersive facilities. The Mapúa University Makati campus houses the Human Health Learning and Innovation Center, a learning space equipped with the most modern suite of multifunctional simulation rooms, tools and digital innovations where students and faculty members create an immersive learning environment. “We have good simulation models that would ease the anxiety of students when they go to the actual hospital setting because [they’re] already acclimated [in our facilities],” Toriaga said. Ganding added that the students’ training at the facilities and through the pilot model allow the students to practice, learn from mistakes and gain confidence in a controlled and safe environment. “So that when they go to the actual training hospital and clinical scenario, they will be able to address and provide global, top-class services to patients,” he said.
Promotes interdisciplinary learning. The institution promotes interprofessional interaction and collaboration among the different programs in Health Sciences. “One of our distinguishing parts is that our students get to train together with other healthcare professionals. In other universities, nurses only trains with nurses and doctors only train with doctors but we really designed simulation scenarios where an interprofessional healthcare team will be there,” Ganding noted.
Access to a Faculty of Experts. You learn from the experts as the faculty members are composed of professors who are licensed professionals in their respective fields and have significant positions in local organizations. Cruz said that they go beyond the traditional approach and incorporate innovations to traditional learning. “One of the most resounding concepts or ideas that our Dean specifically goes for is that we have to train the students of the future to become very multifaceted. The future is actually looking into the bigger picture so a professional in the healthcare field can also be knowledgeable on data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and even programming can be an advantage,” the Program Chair of Pharmacy continued.
Digital, AI-equipped healthcare education. Students are empowered with integrated and advanced digital learning into the curriculum. This provides a competitive edge for students in the rapidly evolving healthcare industry. “The faculty members are also good in data and AI. They can do data science. In the 21st century, we are now dealing with a lot of big data, for example, clinical data. One of the challenges we encounter is how to interpret particular data in connection to diseases. These are things that are not being tackled in other universities and because we have a strong foundation, we have faculty members who can handle Life Sciences and basically who can do computer programming and medical informatics. Data science and AI are part of the curriculum and students are equipped with knowledge to analyze data science,” Dean Tayo said.
Microcredentials in Healthcare. Because of Mapúa School of Health Sciences’ collaboration with ASU, students have access to microcredentials, a form of short and focused learning certification programs. “Students can collect these microcredentials in their undergraduate years in [Health Sciences],” Dean Tayo stated. With microcredentials, this empowers students to have real-world experiential learning opportunities and give students a competitive advantage when seeking employment.
Support through “Student Journey.” The concern for student success is covered by Mapúa School of Health Sciences’ “student journey.” Ganding explains the concept behind it. “We have what we call ‘student journey.’ It’s like a map from the moment students enter the university up until they graduate. Everyone has a pathway. The student’s competency, communication skills, transferable skills, technical skills—all of those are being monitored. We also show that as frequent as possible to the student para alam nila kung nasaang banda na sila ng journey nila when it comes to their respective program.” The process ensures that students are being guided to get better in their pathway towards success.
Through its collaboration with ASU, the Mapúa School of Health Sciences is making world-class healthcare education accessible to Filipino students so they can look forward to a globally-ready career as a healthcare professional.
