Filipino Contemporary Artist Sean Go Confronts the Monumental in “Colossus”: A Towering Tribute to Scale and Wonder

Following successful exhibitions in Japan, the US, and across Europe, acclaimed Filipino contemporary artist Sean Go returns to Asia with his highly anticipated solo exhibition “Colossus,” opening September 6, 2025 at León Gallery International in Makati. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by scale,” reveals Go. “It’s a concept that shaped my childhood—the towering T-Rex in Jurassic Park, the sheer force of Godzilla and King Kong smashing through cityscapes, and the epic battles that unfolded on the simple grids of Battleship and Snakes and Ladders. These weren’t just stories; they were a way of understanding my place in a world that often felt too big to comprehend.”

Colossus is Go’s ambitious attempt to bring that feeling to life.

The exhibition features towering works reaching up to seven feet in height with widths extending to nine feet, each serving as a monument to the giants that have captivated audiences across generations. Go’s vision extends far beyond mere recreation – he wanted to capture the very essence of their scale, the overwhelming presence that makes viewers crane their necks and feel genuinely small.

What makes this exhibition groundbreaking is Go’s innovative construction approach. Using a revolutionary mix of traditional and new media, each piece is constructed from 3D-printed materials with the help of Sean’s brother, Mark Go, but they are deliberately not smooth or polished. Instead, these colossal figures are made up of what look like micromachines—tiny, intricate components that give the illusion of immense complexity and power.

“It’s a paradox: the smallest parts building the biggest creatures,” explains Go, highlighting the conceptual brilliance driving the entire exhibition.

This mechanical aesthetic creates sculptures that pulse with almost organic energy, as if these giants could spring to life at any moment. The micromachine construction technique transforms each artwork into a meditation on scale itself – viewers examine both minute details of individual components and the overwhelming totality of the assembled beast.

The aesthetic language of “Colossus” represents Go’s signature fusion of street art’s raw energy with classic comic book storytelling traditions. This creates a visual vocabulary that captures both urban grit and explosive pop culture dynamism, resulting in works that feel simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic.

“This show is an invitation to look up, to be humbled, and to rediscover the sense of wonder that comes with facing something monumental,” adds Go. “It’s about the feeling you get when you’re standing at the base of a skyscraper, or when you imagine a dinosaur’s roar echoing through a valley.”
