The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Laureates: Sci. Dpl. Glenn Banaguas and Prof. Hassan Shafik Abdullah

Glenn Banaguas, world‑renowned science diplomat and multi‑awarded scientist, has been chosen as one of the first Laureates of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award, joining Prof. Hassan Shafik Abdullah of the University of East London in this historic recognition.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award, inaugurated in 2025, is under the patronage of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi of Egypt. The field of the inaugural awards is under the title: “Green Technology Applications for Achieving Well‑Being and Happiness for Humanity.” This theme reflects the institution’s mission to honor individuals whose work advances sustainability, innovation, and human flourishing. The award carries a monetary value of one million Egyptian pounds, along with a gold medal and an official certificate of excellence, and will be conferred by President El‑Sisi this coming February in Cairo.

Banaguas extended his deepest gratitude to Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and to the esteemed Board of Judges for their trust and recognition. “This honor is not mine alone; it is a tribute to the journey of resilience, stewardship, and service, a journey that binds us together in purpose and hope,” he said.

He added: “Above all, I believe that love is the greatest blessing a life can offer, for it is love that gives meaning to service and strength to resilience. Awards remind us not of what we have achieved, but of what we are called to continue… to serve humanity with humility and courage. True happiness is found not in recognition, but in the lives we touch and the hope we inspire.”

As the first Filipino Laureate of this prestigious award, Banaguas’s recognition underscores the growing role of science diplomacy and sustainability leadership in bridging nations and advancing resilience. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award affirms his enduring commitment to ensuring that science remains a beacon of hope for generations.
