The US Potato Board (USPB) donated a total of 100 kg of US standard potato flakes to two children’s homes in Metro Manila as a result of their #USPotatoesForACause social media contest.
The USPB team visited the orphanages and taught the kitchen staff of the institutions easy-to-do recipes using US standard potato flakes.
USPB Food Engineer, Febbie Falla, demonstrated how easy it is to prepare US standard potato flakes. “You just have to add butter and your choice of liquid to the flakes, mix well, and in a few seconds the potato mixture will turn into mashed potatoes,” says Falla.
US standard potato flakes can also be used as extenders for burgers and soups to make it heavier and healthier plus it is easy to prepare for big groups. “A half kilo of US standard potato flakes can give up to 100 servings,” Falla added.
“This is a good alternative for regular baby food,” says Robert Estrada, Head Cook of one of the institutions. “It’s really hard to develop weekly nutritious meals for the children, especially for the babies. Since the US standard potato flakes can easily be turned into mashed potatoes, I can just add vegetables, like carrots, and have instant healthy food the babies will love,” he added.
The #USPotatoesForACause is a social media contest hosted by the USPB that encourages Filipino Facebook users to post their own US potato recipes on their Facebook wall and use the hashtag #USPotatoesForACause.
For every recipe submitted, the USPB will donate a kilo of potatoes to the beneficiaries.
