Comedy fans looking for one of the hottest acts this summer, need not just settle for a Netflix fix or the typical comedy bars in town, instead they can watch seasoned stand-up comedian Mike Unson perform live with his unique and original brand of observational comedy peppered with laugh-out-loud stories about love-hate relationships, pop culture and the challenges of urban life in Manila.
Mike’s summer stand-up comedy show schedule includes Conspiracy Bar on April 22 and Historia Boutique Bar & Restaurant on May 5, 2017.
Performing for more than 14 years in local club circuits, corporate events and television talk shows, Mike will dazzle guests with his intelligent and witty punchlines, which takes inspiration from the sublime stand-up comedy format of Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Ricky Gervais.
As an artist, he writes and performs original comedy skits and scripts which are never obscene and delivered with panache and acerbic wit. He mainly enjoys being on stage for live stand-up comedy performances where he is in his element and interacts with the audience. Like a scientist of comedy, he researches his materials; gauges and analyzes the audience response and laughter; keeps on refining his craft; experiments on delivery of lines; and tries out the best phrase that works for his punchlines.
Mike was the opening act of Rob Schneider’s live stand-up comedy show in Manila in 2013. He was also part of the Rex Navarette shows as an opener and eventually featured performer in Manila from 2004-2014. Recently, he was nominated as Best Stand-Up Comedian in the 2016 Aliw Awards.
He also created Comedy Mayhem, a production company which evolved from several different names since 2005 and continued to showcase comedians, spoken word artists and musicians in live shows in Manila and out of town. For live acts, he also has a special arrangement with Comedy Cartel, a group of stand-up comedians managed by E-circle entertainment and founded by Tim Tayag, Al Manalo & Patrick Cruz. At times, he headlines shows for Comedy Cartel and trains the group’s new members.
With a broader experience on Philippine entertainment and a grip on what makes the local audience laugh while appealing to their intelligence, Mike is no stranger to television. He was one of the main hosts of an alternative comedy show “Front Act” on TV 5 in 2009 and for several years now to date, he is part of the creative team that conceptualizes episodes of one of the most popular and award-winning sitcoms on GMA 7.
