In September 26, 2016, the prestigious Tokyo International Film Festival announced their official line-up. “Birdshot”, the sophomore feature film of Mikhail RED, will be competing in the Asian Future Competitive section where it will vie for the Best Asian Future Film award with a $10,000 cash prize, and The Spirit of Asia Award by the Japan Foundation Asia Center.
24-year-old Mikhail Red, son of 2000 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Raymond Red, wrote the screenplay with cousin Rae Red in 2014. According to Producer Pamela L. Reyes, it was not long enough when “Birdshot” received its first recognition. In early 2015, “Birdshot” was awarded with a $70,000 production grant from the Doha Film Institute in Qatar. In October 2015, “Birdshot” won the CJ Entertainment award with a $10,000 cash prize at Busan International Film Festival’s ASIAN PROJECT MARKET in South Korea. To further develop the screenplay and the project, “Birdshot” was selected as a project at Festival des 3 Continents’ Produire au Sud workshop.
To complete its financing, “Birdshot” producer Pamela L. Reyes approached the producers of the highest grossing Filipino historical film of all time “Heneral Luna”, Fernando Ortigas and E. A. Rocha. Not long enough, a co-production was in place with Pamela L. Reyes and Mikhail Red’s PelikulaRED, and Fernando Ortigas’ Tuko Film Productions and E. A. Rocha’s Buchi Boy Films. Production started in November 2015 with locations in Davao, Isabela, and Rizal.With the help of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, “Birdshot” filmed the Philippine Eagles at the Philippine Eagle Sanctuary in Davao.
“Birdshot” is a mystery-thriller film that tells a story of a young Filipina farm girl who wanders into the boundaries of a Philippine reservation forest. Deep within the reservation she mistakenly shoots and kills a critically endangered and protected Philippine Eagle. As the local authorities begin a manhunt to track down the poacher of a national bird, their investigation leads them to an even more horrific discovery.
One of biggest film festivals in the world, TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL will happen on October 25 to November 3, 2016. “Birdshot” actors Mary Joy Apostol and Arnold Reyes, Director Mikhail Red, and Producer Pamela L. Reyes will grace the green carpet ceremony on October 25 where Meryll Streep and Hugh Grant will be in attendance for the opening film “Florence Foster Jenkins”.
